Susan's Tips: When Should I Replace My Self-Healing Cutting Mat?

Self-healing cutting mats are designed and made to last for years. As the name implies, they can repair damage caused by routine wear and tear. However, several factors may shorten or extend their lifespan, including how they're used (e.g., for fabric cutting or crafting), how often they're washed, and general maintenance.

In general, more reputable name brands will perform and hold up better as they have better technology than cheaper non-branded mats on the market.

So, how do you know when your self-healing mat has self-healed itself for the very last time? Consider the following factors when deciding whether to salvage your mat or say goodbye:

How stained and damaged, is it? Has it stopped repairing itself? Does it have a lot of gashes on the surface? After washing it, is there little or no improvement?

If you answered yes, probably time to investigate buying a new mat. Our favorite cutting mat for quilters are:
  • A3 – 24 x 18
  • A2 – 48 x 36
  • 16 inches by 16 inches
If you have ample space, I suggest the 48 x 36, which stores nicely under a bed!
