Back-to-Sewing School - Inspiring Creativity During Distance Learning

It can be hard to tear kids away from their screens, and with the Fall 2020 school year shaping up to be a little — or a lot — different this year, our kids will be spending more time than ever staring into the digital abyss.

It will be more important than ever to find activities that excite your kids enough to spend quality time offline.

But what?

Sewing!

Sewing is an all-around A+ hobby that positively impacts character development and mental growth while giving your child's creative muscle a serious workout.

On top of that, sewing improves concentration and focus, strengthens hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, builds confidence and problem-solving skills, and teaches your children a practical lifelong skill. Oh, and sewing uses plenty of math to boot!

When planning your daily at home school schedule, why not incorporate a "Maker Hour" during which your child can spend 30 to 60 minutes learning and practicing sewing? We'll be back online (and hopefully in-store) with classes this fall, and in the meantime, we love these two great books for teaching your children to sew: Sewing School 1 and Sewing School 2, (both are available online at Chateau Sew or in our shops).

One of the easiest ways to get your kids excited to sew is by having them choose fabrics they love and setting a project goal. For example, why not invite them to make a holiday gift for their best friend or teacher? Who knows, if they start soon, maybe they'll master the craft enough to sew for everyone on your list!

We love this simple DIY Drawstring Backpack as a great project to start with and we're flush with fabric too adorable to resist!
